Daily Prompt: Cheat

via Daily Prompt: Cheat

Indeed, our subject matter today is a sobering consideration of an act which mankind would be much better off without or maybe not? Alas, the act in question – Cheat. So, as scampering rapidly away from ourselves is simply impossible (at least, that is, the last time I checked), here are two different kinds of cheat to put you down in the dumps even further.

The highly lauded French economist Thomas Piketty wrote a groundbreaking novel a few years ago (which, if my few grey cells recollect correctly was called ‘Capital’) in which he mainly railed against the sheer injustice of inequality in the developed world as well as the Third World. Recently, Piketty gave a speech in South Africa where he was at it again, this time taking big Western multinationals to task for shamelessly avoiding the mandatory civic duty of paying taxes to the governments of countries in which they operate.

Indeed, this crusading French intellectual is a man after my own heart. And the thing is he is stating the naked  truth. Many Western companies whose tentacles extend far and wide avoid paying taxes by stealthily stashing their revenues in notorious tax havens. This damnable practice of tax avoidance on the part of these exceedingly affluent multinational companies (MNCs) is even worse when they do it in the Third World where countries need all the revenue that they can muster in order to quicken development, improve delivery of vital services such as health and education as well as attend to other pressing challenges which blight life in the developing world.

Although tax dodging is not your usual run-of-the-mill sort of cheat, is it not still to cheat?

Moving on, although as you can judge by now we are venturing into even gloomier waters, another form of cheat which I strongly feel about is in football – match-fixing. matchfixing2It is staggering to note that football has been indisputably the globe’s most favorite sport for the last several decades. Still, despite this, one vice in particular is ominously potent enough to imperil the future of football and this scourge is match-fixing.

Match-fixing is to cheat in one the highest forms. It is the collusion of a team with criminals in order for the outcome of a football match to be predetermined before that game is played. In such scenarios, football teams agree with their criminal bedfellows to deliberately play poorly and lose a match intentionally so that illegal bets which are placed on just such an outcome of a defeat occurring can lead to a bumper harvest of money for their partners-in-crime, the corrupt football team and of course the criminal betting syndicates which specialize in this wholly detestable enterprise.

Thus, after leading you through this reflection on the murky, despicable terrain of cheat, this writer is presently feeling a tad disheartened.
